Fish Island is the site of the first oil refinery in the United States—refining first whale oil, then fish oil, then kerosene. Pennsylvania crude was brought in after whale oil became more expensive to obtain and alcohol fuel was highly taxed, and so set the United States on its trajectory of petroleum dependence. Now, as easily accessed petroleum supply is at its peak, Fish Island is a place to revisit energy choices and craft new paradigms for a new age of zero dependency on finite energy supplies.
